Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee & Member, Public Accounts Committee, Clement Abas Apaak  has called out Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum for defining review as a cancellation.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum reportedly said “if anybody says they will review Free SHS it means one thing. That person want to cancel it and we won’t allow that”

Reacting to this on his X account, the Member of Parliament for Builsa South Constituency in the Upper East Region on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Clement Apaak said only a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the ruling, New Patriotic Party (NPP) defines review as cancel.

He said Ghanaians should question how they obtain their doctoral degrees and petition the institutions which awarded them doctoral degrees.

“It’s only PhD holders in NPP who define REVIEW as meaning CANCEL. We ought to question how they obtained their doctoral degrees, and must consider petitioning the institutions which awarded them doctoral degrees.” The NDC MP said.

Clement Apaak however, defines review as a formal assessment of something with the intention of instituting change if necessary.

“For the avoidance of doubt, REVIEW means a formal assessment of something with the intention of instituting change if necessary. On the other hand, CANCEL is to decide that an organised event will not happen, or to stop services that you no longer want.”

“How could persons purporting to have earned the highest degree, PhD, say REVIEW means CANCEL. Ghanaians have no appetite for lies this year.” He added.

This development comes after the former president John Dramani Mahama has said he will fix the free senior high school (SHS) programme if voted into power during the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at a campaign tour in Kongo in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region, Mr Mahama who is seeking a comeback said the current situation of the free SHS programme is appalling and counterproductive.

In his view, it is rather encumbering students and parents instead of its intended purpose of providing some academic and financial respite.

“Free SHS is not working properly,” he told the delegates on his tour, explaining that neither the parents nor students are reaping its fruits.

“I can tell you today that the money we are spending on our children to go to school is far more than when we used to pay school fees,” Mr. Mahama said.
