The Women Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tain constituency of the Bono region, Amponsah Gyan Gloria has called for the taxes imposed on disposable sanitary pads to be scrapped.

According to her, menstrual health is a natural life process in females and therefore being decent needs materials to help themselves, hence the use of the sanitary pads.

“When God created humans, He added a menstruation life cycle to females and when one menstruates, she can’t move around with blood stains in the dresses, that’s why they introduced pads”. She said.

Ms. Gloria said sanitary pads are now considered as a luxury product by the government, a development she deemed unfortunate.

“so why should they consider sanitary pads as a luxury and charge luxury taxes on it”. She bemoaned.

She stated that the use of sanitary pads is considered a political weapon, therefore urging the government to remove the taxes that allow females access to the products with ease.

Speaking on a radio interview in Tain monitored by Ark FM’s Fosuaa, she expressed that luxury does not affect the use of sanitary pads. “Luxury is a condition of abundance or great ease and comfort, how can this be involved in menstrual flow? Is menstrual flow a luxury?” she quizzed.

According to her, the initiative by the government is a black-hearted and give to women. “Most women and girls using disposable menstrual materials is the preferred choice for the sake of effective management of reusable menstrual pads and cloth is a challenge”, she expressed.

She added that, most girls from low-income households in Ghana are unable to access the sanitary pads to ensure optimal hygiene due to the high cost of the product, therefore engage in premature sexual engagements to help afford the product and causing teenage pregnancies”.
