The Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency and Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against internal divisions, warning that factionalism poses grave and long-term consequences for the party’s electoral fortunes and governance capacity.

Speaking at the peace pact signing ceremony for NPP presidential aspirants ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries, Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that unity remains the party’s strongest asset as it prepares for a crucial internal contest.

According to him, while internal competition may energize party members during primaries, unresolved factionalism ultimately weakens the party’s ability to win national elections and govern effectively.

“Factionalism may energies internal contests, but it weakens the party’s capacity to win national elections and to govern effectively.”

Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed deep concern over the damaging effects of disunity, citing comments by former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, who publicly disclosed that he did not vote in the 2024 general elections.

“I was saddened hearing that the respected Professor Frimpong Boateng saying publicly that he did not vote in the 2024 elections. This is what division can do to us. It is unfortunate.”

He noted that such developments should serve as a wake-up call for party members and leadership to prioritize reconciliation, mutual respect, and collective responsibility over personal ambition.

The Minority Leader urged presidential aspirants and their supporters to conduct their campaigns with decorum and restraint, emphasizing that the peace pact was not a mere formality but a commitment to protect the future of the party.

Mr Afenyo-Markin further called on party faithful to remember the broader goal of retaining power, stressing that victory in the primaries must not come at the expense of party cohesion.

The peace pact signing ceremony brought together leading figures of the NPP, aspirants, and party executives, as part of efforts to ensure a peaceful, credible, and united presidential primary process ahead of the 2026 elections.
