Ghana’s efforts toward the promotion and protection of child rights have received international commendation at a global child rights engagement held in Geneva, Switzerland.
At the event, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection presented Ghana’s national report on child rights interventions, with notable contributions from the Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah.
Speaking during the engagement, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah highlighted key government initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and protection of children across the country.
She underscored measures to promote gender parity in education, stressing government’s commitment to ensuring equal access to schooling for both boys and girls, particularly in underserved communities.
The Salaga South MP also drew attention to the introduction of mobile birth registration systems, which she said are helping to register newborns in hard-to-reach and rural areas, thereby safeguarding children’s legal identity and access to essential social services.
Touching on legislative oversight, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah outlined the role of Parliament’s Gender Committee, explaining that the committee regularly monitors shelters for vulnerable, abused and displaced persons to ensure they meet approved standards of care, safety and protection.
She further disclosed that government has intensified efforts to combat drug abuse among teenagers, revealing that offices of the Narcotics Control Commission have been established in district capitals to decentralize services and provide timely support at the community level.
The engagement was described as a major success, with Ghana receiving applause and commendation from participants for its policy frameworks and practical interventions aimed at safeguarding the rights of children.
The Ghanaian delegation to the global forum was led by the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, reaffirming the country’s strong commitment to upholding the rights, safety and overall wellbeing of children in line with international standards.
