The General Manager for Green Generation Farms Ltd, in the Techiman North District of the Bono East Region, Mr. Emmanuel Frimpong Manso, has appealed to the government to procure eggs from local poultry farmers for distribution to schools under the national School Feeding Programme.
He made the call following what he described as a persistent egg glut affecting farmers across the country, a situation that has left many with excess stock, financial losses, and limited market access.
According to Mr. Frimpong Manso, purchasing eggs for schoolchildren would not only provide a nutritious and affordable source of protein but also offer immediate economic relief to poultry farmers whose products often go to waste during periods of oversupply.
He explained that while last year’s major challenge was the high cost of feed, the industry is currently grappling with the lack of buyers, leaving large quantities of eggs piled up in storage facilities.
“Our major challenge this year is not feed cost but the glut of eggs. Last year, the cost of feed was very high, but this year that is not the case. Instead, we have a large stock of eggs in our storeroom, yet we are struggling to get buyers.” he said.
He appealed to the government to intervene by purchasing eggs directly from farmers and channeling them to the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) to help address the glut and ensure the nutritional needs of children are met.
“We are hoping that the government, if possible, will purchase eggs directly from farmers and supply them to the Ghana School Feeding Programme Secretariat for use in the school feeding programme to help address the current egg glut,” he added.
He also raised concerns about reports of foreign nationals, particularly some Chinese investors, venturing into large-scale poultry farming in Ghana. He described the development as a threat to local industry players.
“We have also heard that some Chinese investors are now involved in large-scale poultry farming in the country, which is not good for the local industry. We therefore urge government to implement policies that will protect local industry players,” he stressed.
He explained that protecting the poultry sector is essential for safeguarding jobs, sustaining domestic production, and ensuring long-term food security in the country.
