New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia says Ghana’s transformation is hinged on innovative ideas rather than the amount of money the government has at hand.
He made the remarks while highlighting what he described as key achievements driven by innovation during his tenure as Vice President, when he addressed some party supporters in Ketu South.
Dr. Bawumia stressed, “It is not the money in your pocket that will allow you to transform Ghana. It is the ideas in your head,” he said.
He noted that when the erstwhile NPP administration assumed office, the Ghana Card had not yet been issued to the public. According to him, he was tasked with providing oversight and collaborating with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to ensure the card’s rollout.
“We issued the Ghana Card, and Ghana today is one of the few countries in the world with a digital national ID of this kind,” he stated.
He also pointed to major reforms in the country’s mobile money sector. According to him, before these reforms, users could not transfer funds across networks or move money between bank accounts and mobile wallets. “I said it was possible for us to do it in Ghana, and we have done it,” he stressed.
Dr. Bawumia explained that mobile money interoperability has transformed the way Ghanaians use digital financial services. He said the system now allows users to renew National Health Insurance, pay electricity and water bills, and even receive international transfers directly onto their mobile money accounts.
He added that Ghana is the only African country offering such a comprehensive mobile money platform.
He further cited the growth of mobile money operations as a major source of employment. “When we came, MoMo agents were 107,000. Now they are 900,000. We have created 800,000 jobs for MoMo agents,” he said.
The former Vice President urged Ghanaians to judge him based on his performance and the systems he has helped build. He insisted that development hinges on creativity, not cash.
Dr. Bawumia told supporters that if he could deliver such initiatives without the full executive authority of the presidency, he could achieve even more if elected.
“You have seen what I can do as Vice President without the power. If you make me president, I will bring ‘Abrokyire’ to Ghana,” he declared, promising to make Ghana a place with opportunities comparable to those abroad.
