The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has called for greater order, efficiency, and respect for parliamentary procedures during the vetting of Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Barffour Bonnie.
Speaking to the media after the vetting session, Hon. Ibrahimah commended the Speaker of Parliament for asserting his authority and ensuring that the laws of the House were upheld to maintain decorum and fairness throughout the process.
She noted that at a certain point in the vetting, it became necessary for the committee to determine which matters were relevant to the process and which issues needed to be set aside. According to her, it was important for the Appointments Committee to stay focused on the main task of vetting the nominee and to deal with any remaining matters subsequently.
Hon. Ibrahimah also expressed concern over the amount of time wasted during the session, pointing out that after more than two hours, there was little progress to show. She described time as a valuable and irreplaceable resource, stressing that such delays hinder the productive work of Parliament.
“I expected the committee to continue with the vetting and handle any other issues later. Parliament should not appear disorganized before the public.
“My main concern is that parliamentary duties should be carried out efficiently and in their proper order.” she stated.
The Salaga South MP further urged her colleagues to strictly adhere to parliamentary rules to safeguard the integrity of proceedings. Referring to comments made by the Majority Leader during the session, she highlighted that the privilege for members to make preliminary statements is not a right but a courtesy, warning that abusing that privilege could result in its withdrawal in future sittings.
Hon. Ibrahimah expressed optimism that the Appointments Committee would resume its work promptly and conclude the vetting process smoothly. She added that she looks forward to the confirmation of Justice Paul Barffour Bonnie and the formation of a renewed and effective Supreme Court.
