GIFEC urges youth to embrace ICT education for digital empowerment

The Bono East Regional Manager of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), Madam Francis Atta Bafouwaa, has encouraged the youth to take Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education seriously and make good use of the training opportunities provided by GIFEC to enhance their digital skills.

According to her, GIFEC was established to bridge the digital divide by extending telecommunication networks to rural communities that lack connectivity. She explained that the agency also provides schools with computers to strengthen ICT teaching and learning.

She explained the importance of digital literacy in today’s world, saying, “The internet pays a lot now, so it is important for everyone to equip themselves with ICT knowledge to remain relevant in today’s digital world.”

The regional manager further urged the public, especially schools and community groups in need of ICT resources, to apply to GIFEC for support. She also highlighted that the organization runs various training programmes to help young people and entrepreneurs acquire ICT skills and use technology to create business opportunities

Madam Francis Atta Bafouwaa, stated that the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) continues to play a vital role in promoting digital inclusion across the country through its Rural Telephony Project, which seeks to extend communication and internet access to underserved and unserved communities.

“When we talk about GIFEC, it is all about the Rural Telephony Project. It focuses on helping people, especially in rural areas, to learn more about the internet.”

She continued, “Beyond expanding connectivity, GIFEC also implements several empowerment programmes that aim to equip women and young entrepreneurs with practical ICT skills. The office noted that “GIFEC also runs several programs that provide computers and train women to use ultra-modern machines to support and advertise their businesses.”

Madam Francis Atta Bafouwaa said this while speaking with our reporter at the end of a three-day training programme organised by the Techiman GIFEC Office to train the youth on the appropriate use of Artificial Intelligence.

The Techiman GIFEC Centre Manager, Mr. Muniru Kavua, also encouraged the public to take advantage of the opportunities available at the centre.

According to him, Mr. Kavua explained that GIFEC’s certificates are recognized and can be used to apply for jobs, making the training both practical and beneficial for career advancement

“The ICT center is a government facility, so everyone can take part. We are located near the pensioners’ area. Participation is free, and at the end of the training, participants will receive a certificate. If you are close to Techiman, you are welcome to join.”

Touching on the program, he stated that, “We initially planned to take only 50 people, but unfortunately, only 20 participated. We encourage everyone to help promote and improve the ICT programs.”
