Hundreds of young people in Salaga took to the streets on last Tuesday, November 4, 2025 in a peaceful protest dubbed #SalagaDeservesBetter, to demand urgent government attention to the town’s long-standing development challenges.
The demonstration, organized by the youth of the East Gonja Municipality, was sparked by persistent concerns over unstable electricity supply, the abandonment of the 60-bed Euroget Salaga District Hospital project, poor road networks, and acute water shortages that have plagued the area for years.
Clad in red and black, the protesters marched through the principal streets of Salaga, chanting songs and carrying placards bearing inscriptions such as “We deserve better roads,” “Fix our water crisis,” and “Complete our hospital now.”
At the end of the march, the group presented a petition to the East Gonja Municipal Assembly. The Municipal Coordinating Director, who received the petition on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Salaga South, assured the demonstrators that their concerns would be duly relayed to the appropriate authorities.
He disclosed that he had earlier spoken with the MP, Hon. Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, who expressed her solidarity with the youth and reaffirmed her commitment to collaborate with government agencies and stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the issues confronting the Municipality.
The protest ended peacefully, with organizers commending participants for their discipline and unity of purpose. Despite the day’s alternating rain and sunshine, the demonstrators remained resolute, dispersing in good spirits after what they described as a “powerful and necessary statement.”
Residents of Salaga say they hope the #SalagaDeservesBetter campaign will mark a turning point in the government’s approach to addressing the town’s critical infrastructure and social needs.
