Make Sanitary Pads affordable – Damiana Hemaa appeals to government

A Women Advocate, Nana Yaa Amponsah, Damiana Hemaa of Kintampo in the Bono East Region has stressed on the need for the government to eradicate and reduce the taxes on female hygiene products.

According to her, the female is a special creature with certain natural and crucial duties especially Menstruation therefore feminine hygiene products or sanitary pads should be made free or adequately available for women especially adolescence during that special time of the month.

“Government should help in the  provision of sanitary pads to the schools, this will prevent a situation where girls who can’t buy pads during menstruation from feeling bad in school”. She said

She was speaking in an interview with Nana Yaw Aboagye when the Brong Ahafo Regional chapter of Ghana National Association of Teachers – Ladies (GNAT-LAS) partnered ANIJIE Global Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to sensitize School Children in the Kintampo Municipality ahead of this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The program which took place at the Kintampo Municipal Assembly Hall, saw the facilitators taking the adolescent girls through the proper use of menstrual hygiene products, distributing free sanitary pads and educating them on abstinence from illicit affairs during young age.

The Regional GNAT-LAS Coordinator,    Madam Gloria Anima Snr, encouraged Girls not to look down upon themselves or shy away from their daily activities during that time of the month because menstruation is a gift from God.

She explained that, “Menstruation is part of life, it has come to stay with us that is why our theme for this year’s celebrations is Making Menstruation a normal fact of life by 2030, so going forward, we will ask government to reduce the prices of sanitary pads for it to be affordable for all”.

Finally, some of the School Girls who benefited from the sensitization as well as free sanitary pads in an interview with Nana Kwadwo Adu of Asta FM expressed gratitude to the organizers of the program and also shared some challenges facing them.
