President Mahama reaffirms commitment to quality education, vows to sustain Free SHS

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his unwavering commitment to enhancing the standard of education in Ghana.

Delivering his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, February 27, 2025, in Parliament, the President assured Ghanaians that the Free Senior High School (SHS) program will not be canceled under his administration but will rather enhance the program by addressing its shortcomings, implementing reforms, and improving access, quality, and sustainability.

“Mr. Speaker, Honourable Members, once again for emphasis and for the record, I, John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, will not cancel the free SHS program. I will rather make it better from the implementation problems that it has been facing.

“Our focus is to improve learning conditions, provide adequate resources, and ensure that students receive the best education possible,” he stated.

President Mahama emphasized that education remains a top priority for national development, and every effort will be made to ensure quality, accessibility, and sustainability of the Free SHS policy.

His remarks come in response to concerns about the future of the program. He reassured parents, students, and educators that the government is fully committed to addressing challenges in the education sector, including expanding school facilities, providing learning materials, and improving teacher welfare.

His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama earlier gave the assurance during the 2024 election campaign seasons that he would not cancel the program.
