Former Chief Justice pledges loyalty, integrity as Council of State member

Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo has stated that she will not be “singing her master’s voice” in her role as a member of the Council of State.

According to her, she is dedicated and committed to serving in an advisory capacity with honesty and integrity.

Speaking after her swearing-in at the Jubilee House in Accra, Akuffo reaffirmed her commitment to providing unbiased and truthful guidance to the government.

She explained that the Council of State plays a crucial advisory role, and she intends to uphold the highest standards of fairness and objectivity in her contributions.

“The Council of State is a body that is supposed to be advising the president. I am not going to be singing his master’s voice, so to speak. An adviser does not parrot.

“An adviser speaks with honesty. An adviser looks to the best interest not only of the person they are advising but of the function the person is serving,” she explained.

With her vast experience in law and governance, Akuffo’s appointment is expected to add significant value to the Council’s deliberations as it continues to guide the executive on key national issues.

Madam Akuffo, served as Ghana’s Chief Justice between June 2017 and December 2019, after the inauguration of the Council by the President at the Jubilee House Tuesday, February 18, 2025, defended her right to be part of the 31-member Council of State.

The former Chief Justice, who was visibly responding to concerns about a section of the public on her membership on the Council told journalists she qualifies per her position as a former head of Ghana’s judiciary.

“I am a former Chief Justice. Am I not? Do I or do I not qualify?”

“I am there in my own right simply as a former Chief Justice. I am not even there representing the Judicial Service.” She stated.
