Payment to DDEP Bondholders: Mahama’s action was in perfect order – Sophia Akuffo

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has commended President John Dramani Mahama for settling GH₵6.081 billion to all Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) bondholders.

She said that Mr. Mahama has proven that he is a law-abiding president.

Speaking to the media after she was sworn in as a member of the Council of State, the former Chief Justice stated the president’s action was in perfect order and it was in accordance with the law.

The Member of Council of State explained that she voiced her concerns not because of her pocket but because I had a contract.

“Well, the President’s action was in perfect order and it was in accordance with the law. Because the stand I took was not because of my pocket but it was because I had a contract, a bond, the state had promised me something, and so I had made my money available, and then suddenly they wanted to change the terms of it and tried to force new terms down my throat. No, that will never be. I was happy and I am happy that the president has shown that he is a law-abiding president,” Sophia Akuffo said.

Statement issued by the presidency said “following the directive from President John Dramani Mahama, the Ministry of Finance has today, February 17, 2025 honoured the Payment-In-Cash (PIC) coupon of GH₵6.081 billion to all Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) bondholders.

Additionally, the Government has also paid into the Debt Service Recovery Cedi Account (Sinking fund) an amount of GH₵9.7 billion as a buffer for the 5th DDEP coupon that will fall due in July and August 2025.
