Reports have emerged that Elmina Sharks FC owner, Paa Kwesi Nduom played a role in the confusion that erupted between his side’s Division One League and Swedru All Stars at the Nduom Sports Complex in Elmina on Sunday, 16th February, 2025.
According to reports published by ghanasoccernet.com, the Founder of Progressive People’s Party (PPP) entered the inner perimeter in a manner that violated the rules and regulations governing the Division One League.
The conduct of Dr. Nduom was alleged to have influenced supporters of Elmina Shark to misbehave leading to physical assault on referee Eso Doh Morrison by Sharks midfielder Jay Asamoah Kola.
The violence erupted after the referee awarded a perfect penalty to the Swedru All Stars.
Players and supporters of Elmina Sharks lost control as they clashed with the match officials at the end of the match which ended 1-0 in favour of the visiting team, Swedru All Stars.
Swedru All Stars spokesperson alleged that the politician and businessman threatened referee Eso Morrison after the penalty was awarded. According to him, the referee’s failure to rescind the penalty resulted in his assault.
Sharks midfielder Jay Asamoah Kola has been charged for assaulting the referee and the club has been also charged for failing to control their players and fans.
This is the second time supporters of Elmina Sharks FC attacked a referee.
Similar incident occured in April 18, 2018, when retired referee Yakubu Nuhu Liman was attacked during a match between the Sharks and Medeama SC.
The recent violence in the Division One League is a call on the Ghana Football Association to put in place measures to ensure the safety of Ghana football following the death of Asante Kotoko supporter, Nana Pooley.
