2025 Independence Day celebration to take place at Jubilee House only

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered that the 2025 Independence Day celebration will be held only at the presidency to cut down government expenditure.

Addressing the media, Minister of State for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated that the Independence Day celebration is significant in the history of Ghana but it is imperative to reduce it to the Jubilee House only due to the current state of the country’s economy.

“President Mahama believes that yes there is much to celebrate over Ghana’s Independence, it is significant in the entire history of the country. And he acknowledges the need to celebrate this in a manner that will fit our status as an Independent country. Nonetheless, he is also minded by the current state of the economy, and other pressing needs to re-prioritise on the state expenditure.” He said.

The Independence Day celebration, over the years, takes place at the Independence Square, Accra to bring together many security personnel and students to exhibit their talents.

But Kwakye Ofosu said “In the spirit of cutting down on non-essential expenditure, President Mahama has instructed that this rotational policy be suspended. In addition to this, the main celebration, which ordinarily would have taken place in Accra at Independence Square, has become the subject of some rollback.”

“And one of the areas savings can be made is this Independence celebration. He believes that it is entirely possible to hold a modest but significant event to mark this important occasion without breaking the national purse. For that reason he has decided that this year’s celebration will not take on the spectacular form that we used to know over the years.”
