A devastating fire has engulfed the Techiman Central Market, leaving over 700 shops in ruins.
The fire, which broke out around 9:40 PM last Sunday, affected the Zambrama line, a section of the market renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and wide selection of local products, including textiles, jewelry, crafts, and poultry trading.
The unfortunate incident at the Techiman Central Market, adds to a troubling pattern of market fires in January, 2025 as it follows similar ablaze at major markets across Ghana, including the Kantamanto Market blaze and the Tamale Aboabo Timber Market fire.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, but officials have launched an investigation into the incident.
The Bono East Regional Fire Commander, ACF2 Rev. Naomi Ofori Adubea Sarpong, cautioned the public against the use fire and electrical appliances in their homes, offices or markets.
“We all know the season we are currently in, There have been reports of numerous fire outbreaks across the world and Ghana is no exceptions.
“I will entreat all and sundry to be cautious with the use of fire and electrical appliances because even the smallest mistake can lead to a fire outbreak.” She said
Addressing the fire at the Techiman Central Market, she revealed that, her department was notified about the incident at 9:59 pm.
Rev. Naomi commended the rapid response of her officers in combating the blaze but noted initial challenges due to bystanders getting too close to the scene to take videos.
“We received the call at 9:59 PM, and my officers arrived at the scene within two minutes. They managed to extinguish the fire in less than three hours, so I commend their efforts.
“However, the crowd posed a challenge. Many people at the scene tried to get closer to the fire to take videos, which made it difficult for my officers to work effectively,” she explained.
The market’s vendors and traders are now left to pick up the pieces and assess the damage to their livelihoods.
The Techiman Central Market is not only a crucial economic hub for the local community but also a cultural icon, showcasing the rich heritage and traditions of the region.
Often referred to as the “food basket of Ghana,” it is considered one of the largest food markets in West Africa.
