Minister of Communications to set up committee to reduce data costs

Minister of Communications, Samuel Nartey George has assured that measures have been put in place to address the high cost of data challenge in Ghana.

According to him, he has already engaged the management of the ministry to set up an inter-ministerial committee to ascertain and address the high data cost in the country.

“Yesterday, I met the director and management of the ministry, and I’ve given them the running order. Hopefully, within the next 14 days, we’ll be setting up an inter-ministerial committee to look at the cost of data,” Sam George made this assurance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, 8th February, 2025.

Adding that “At my vetting, I said that it is my fervent belief that before the end of this year, we should see some movements in the data offerings. I said that there are two modules here, either an increase in data or an increase in value offerings, so you could be paying GHC 100 today that would give you 100 GB. Do you want to make the 100 GB  GHC 75 or do you want to maintain the 100 GB but make the Telco offer you 150 GB for the GHC 100, whichever ways you get more value.”

He explained that the stakeholders such as NUGS, the Chamber of Telecom, Ministry of Finance will join the inter-ministerial to help examine and address the challenges.

“So we are going to look at those modules, now the committee we are setting up is inter-ministerial, we are going to have representative from the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Finance, is going to have representative from PURC and from groups like NUGS, the chamber of Telecoms, from the content producers.”
