Liverpool legend James Lee Duncan Carragher, popularly known as Jamie Carragher, has disclosed that he was never in doubt about the Reds securing their place in the English Football League (EFL) Cup final.
The Lilywhites secured a 1:0 win over Liverpool at the New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on January 8, 2025 in the 1st leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals. However, Liverpool responded emphatically at Anfield, thrashing Spurs 4-0 in the second leg to seal their place in the final with a 4-1 aggregate score.
The former Reds defender revealed that, despite the early setback, the odds were always in Liverpool’s favor given their strength at home and their dominance in domestic competitions this season.
“The odds were massively in favour of Liverpool. They are at home at Anfield, they are the best team in the country and possibly in Europe right now.” He stated
Liverpool lived up to expectations in the second leg, producing a dominant performance to overturn the deficit and book their place in the final against New Castle United at the Wembley.
A first-half strike by Cody Mathès Gakpo, canceled out Tottenham Hotspur’s first leg advantage, while second half goals from Mohamed Salah Hamed Mahrous Ghaly, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil Van Dijk ensured a comfortable passage to the final for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
With the final now set, Liverpool will look to add yet another trophy to their cabinet, reaffirming their status as one of England’s most formidable sides.
Meanwhile, the Reds continue to lead the Premier League standings with 56 points and a goal difference of +35 as they pursue a potential league and cup double this season.
