The Ghana Permaculture Institute, a non-governmental organization based in Tanoboase at the Techiman North Municipality of the Bono East Region, has successfully completed a training workshop for moringa farmers within the country on best agroecology practices.
The training, was aimed at empowering moringa farmers across the length and breadth of the country on how best to grow and care for Moringa oleifera without the use of chemicals and other synthetic products.
The program, also served as a platform for moringa farmers to share their experiences of the Ghana Permaculture Institute.
The Chief Executive Officer for Ghana Permaculture Institute, Madam Agnes Ameyaa, urged farmers to focus on moringa farming, citing the plant’s medicinal and food value.
“We met purposely for the farmers testify how they have benefited from our trainings and per what they said, it means the trainings have helped them a lot both financially and health wise because aside selling the moringa for income, they also eat some which improves their health.
“We have been exporting moringa for some time now, and if its quality did not meet international standards, we would not have received the permit to export it.” She said
Madam Ameyaa, urged the youth to engage in farming, especially moringa farming, for economic and medicinal purposes. She noted that moringa is a versatile plant that can be used for various purposes, including food, medicine, and cosmetics.
“Although most of our farmers are elderly, we do have some youth among us. I want to take this opportunity to encourage more young people to venture into agribusiness, as it is highly beneficial”
“Apart from buying moringa from our farmers, we also train them in best agroecology practices and teach them how to make soaps and creams from moringa. This provides an alternative source of income. I encourage everyone, especially the youth, to join us in this business.” She said
Some farmers who spoke with our reporter shared their experiences with moringa farming while praising Ghana Permaculture Institute for introducing them to the practice and providing them with the necessary training and support.
“I have been into moringa farming for the past three years and I can gladly say that I have benefited a lot from it both financially and health-wise, I have gotten all the investments I made in the farm and also gotten a lot of interest from that investment.” A farmer told our reporter.
Another farmer explained, “I cannot find the words to explain our moringa farming has helped me and my family, due to the benefits of moringa farming, I have completed almost all the projects I planned for my life and I will entreat all and sundry to join Ghana Permaculture Institute and learn moringa farming.”
