The Techiman Traditional Council in a press statement of last Tuesday, 10th December, 2011, condemned all “acts of indiscipline and hooliganism” that erupted following the recent elections in the Techiman South Constituency.
Addressing the media at the forecourt of the Paramount Chief’s palace, the Techiman Krobohene and Kyidomhene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Oyeadeye Asa Akompanin, said the Techiman Traditional Council are deeply shocked about the events that unfolded after last Saturday’s elections since they went around all the polling stations in their divisional areas during the election.
He further revealed that, the Techiman Traditional with the support of the Ghana Police Service on last Monday, 9th December, 2024, conducted a search at Techiman Divisional Police Headquaters which was serving as the collation center for the Techiman South Constituency and was astonished by the level of damage done to the place by some individuals they suspect to be members and sympathizers of the National Democratic Congress.
“Nananom were shocked at this news because most of us, in order to ensure peaceful elections, went round all polling stations in our divisional areas during the elections.
“Upon hearing that violence had erupted at the collation center, an emergency meeting was held to ascertain the truth/otherwise of the matter. Nananom went round to verify and seethe extent of damage to humans and property.
“The Ghana Police conducted us round the Divisional Police Headquarters in Techiman as to the extent of damage. To our astonishment, some EC machines, ballot papers, motorbike and other related materials were destroyed and some of them burnt to ashes.
“The worst of it all was the building and walls to the premises o the Divisional Policeheadquarters.
The hooligans broke the fence to the building itself with machetes, clubs and other to enable them gain access to the Electoral Commission staff and the Police.” He said
“Surprisingly, the hooligans were wielding guns and shot into the building of the Divisional Command headquarters and the Police never fired back all in the interest of professionalism and peaceful election.
Oyeadeye Asa Akompanin, cautioned members of both the NPP and NDC from claiming victory in the parliamentary elections as the results of the parliamentary elections in Techiman South is not known.
He revealed that, the Techiman South Municipal Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, William Bamfo-Apori, was forced at gun point by the hooligans to declare Christopher Beyere, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate as the winner of the parliamentary elections in Techiman South and as such, that declaration can’t hold.
“Nananom were informed by the EC Returning officer that he was forced at gun point to declare the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate of Techiman South as the winner of the election.
“It was reported that a group of NDC sympathizers numbering around five hundred who were aggrieved by the delay of announcing the results of the polls forced themselves illegally into the collation center to do that act of indiscipline.” He said
