The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, has has announced that GH¢200 million has been released to pay claims of free dialysis for kidney patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as the program starts today Sunday, December 1, 2024.
Vice President and Flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced the inclusion of free kidney dialysis under NHIS during his campaign tour in the Old Tafo constituency in the Ashanti region.
“People above sixty years and children under 18 years were taking the kidney dialysis free. Now the piloting has ended so from December 1, all kidney dialysis patients will receive free treatment under National Health Insurance. ” Dr. Bawumia announced.
In a Facebook post, the NHIA Boss confirmed the free kidney dialysis in the country.
According to Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, twenty hospitals across the country have been accredited to undertake the free kidney dialysis.
“The free dialysis treatment officially starts today, December 1, 2024, in twenty (20) NHIS credentialed facilities across the country. NHIS staff will be in each of these centers to assist kidney dialysis patients.” He posted.
He assured that if a hospital mistakenly charges a kidney dialysis patient, the hospital will refund the money to the patient.
“If a hospital mistakenly charges a patient, a full refund will be issued to the patient. Meanwhile, the NHIS has released over 200 million to facilities nationwide for claims payments,” The post added.
This is in fulfilment of the NPP government to ensure that access to healthcare delivery is given and their commitment to revive the NHIS.
