Canada has ordered Chinese-owned TikTok’s business operation to shut down over what they describe as national security risk.

The Canadian government on Wednesday said it won’t prevent the citizens from using the app but dissolution of its Canadian business.

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne explained that the decision is to address security risks related to ByteDance Ltd.’s establishment of TikTok Technology Canada Inc.

“The Canadian government is not preventing Canadians from accessing the app or creating content. It is a choice to use a social media application or platform but the government is concerned about TikTok’s business operation in Canada.” François-Philippe Champagne.

Currently, TikTok has two offices in Canada which are Toronto and Vancouver.

It would be recalled that Canada earlier banned TikTok from all government-issued mobile devices as part of measures to ByteDance to share user data such as browsing history, location and biometric identifiers with China’s government.

According to François-Philippe Champagne, “The order for TikTok’s business operation was made in accordance with the Investment Canada Act, which allows for the review of foreign investments that may harm Canada’s national security.” Adding that it is imperative for the citizens to be conscious of cybersecurity practice.

Meanwhile, a TikTok spokesperson said the dissolution of the social media platform app offices in Canada has serious consequences such as loss of jobs.

The spokesperson disclosed that they will head to court to appeal the Canadian government’s order. “The APP will be available for people to access videos and create content.

The US has also raised security issues regarding the social media platform (TikTok).
