MFWA assures support for NSS fraud investigation

The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Barimah, has revealed that his outfit has done all the work to make things easier for any investigative body conduct an investigation into the operations of the National Service Authority (NSA).

The Media Foundation for West Africa on December 4, 2021, petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate alleged corruption and related activities at the National Service Authority (NSA).

The petition, was based on months of investigative reporting by The Fourth Estate, which is a public interest and accountability investigative journalism project of the Media Foundation for West Africa. The investigation uncovered what it described as a pattern of corruption and mismanagement at the NSA, reportedly costing the state of million of cedis annually since 2018.

The discovery of the payroll discrepancies prompted President Mahama to take decisive action to ensure transparency and accountability within the Authority. President Mahama has subsequently directed the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to immediately conduct an investigation into the operations of the National Service Authority (NSA) following the discovery of 81,885 suspected ghost names on its payroll.

Reacting to the latest development, Sulemana Barimah has explained that, his outfit has taken all the necessary steps to provide relevant information and evidence that will aid the investigative body in uncovering the truth behind the fraudulent activities.

”We did provide evidence of instances where persons who were 90 years old, I mean, whether they were real or not, but these are individuals whose date of birth are on the National Service Authority’s portal.
”It shows that they are 90 years, 80 years, 70 years, and we are talking about people who were posted in 2022 and apart from that, you know, the then NPP candidate and our vice president, Dr. Bawumia, throughout the campaign, used to flag the NSA, the National Service Authority, NSS then, as one of the success stories of how the Ghana card has been used to eliminate ghost names. He stated.
Sulemana Barimah continued, “It was quite baffling that you go into the system, the NSS system, their portal, their tech platform, and what you find are in some cases, no ID cards used, we have instances where ID cards of Ghana National Fire Service was used. We have a lot of instances where fake voter ID cards were used instead of Ghana card, and we have instances where teacher training college ID cards were used instead of Ghana card.
”In fact, in the section where the ID cards are put, what is written on top is upload your Ghana card, and what you find is either a voter’s ID, a student ID, and no ID at all and and and all the things that you can you can think about, so the data is available and I think it will make any investigations easy.” He stated
